Canada: The PRI has submitted a response to the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada’s consultation.

The PRI welcomes the opportunity to respond to the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada’s consultation on the draft co-operation agreement on environmental and impact assessment between Alberta and Canada. Streamlining will support confidence only where it preserves a credible, transparent framework capable of identifying and managing material environmental, social, Indigenous rights, and legal risks.

The PRI’s key recommendations are for IAAC and the Government of Canada to:

  • Clarify that coordination does not reduce the rigor or independence of impact assessments and ensure that efficiency gains do not come at the expense of transparency or assessment integrity.
  • Clarify how Indigenous rights and consent-seeking are reflected in coordinated processes.
